Buffalo Century Homes Program

Does Your Home Qualify?

If you are the proud owner of a house built 100 or more years ago it may qualify as one of Buffalo’s Century Homes. Please consider taking some time to complete a Century Home Application, listing as much information as possible. Applications will be accepted on a continuous basis, with recognition by Council in January and July of a given year. If interested please submit the online application.

Qualifying Criteria

1. The original structure must have been built for residential use (no combined uses with commercial or other types of uses). Multi-family structures are eligible.
2. The building must be documented to be 100 years old or older.
3. The house must reflect its original architectural character.
4. Additions and alterations to the house are acceptable; however, the original architectural character should not be compromised. Houses that have been resided with vinyl or other siding types are not disqualified from recognition.
5. The house must not exhibit signs of deferred maintenance, which threatens the economic life of the structure.
6. The house should demonstrate how to care for older homes.

Selection Process

The Buffalo Heritage Preservation Advisory Board (HPAB) will review the submitted Century Homes Application each February. All the selection criteria must be met and the findings to this effect will be made for every qualifying home. Application without supporting documentation may not be selected for the Century Homes Program.

Recognition

Qualifying homes and their owners will be recognized at a city council meeting.

Note

This program is an honorary award only. It does not qualify homes for local or national historical designation, nor does it provide financial assistance for maintenance of designated homes.
