The Buffalo Police Department has now joined the cities of Annandale
and Howard Lake in offering the SMART Program to qualified drivers.
The two-hour Drive SMART traffic safety course provides an overview of the latest traffic laws and teaches drivers how to be more aware and more focused behind the wheel. Traffic violators who qualify for this program have the option of attending Drive SMART instead of paying the standard fine. |

Why was Drive SMART created?
The reason we enforce traffic laws is to increase the safety of our roadways for everyone! Obviously, some violations are more serious than others - and corrective action in the form of a citation is appropriate. In other cases, we believe that education can be a very effective tool in correcting driving behavior. For minor violations, and specifically, for otherwise safe drivers, Drive SMART provides an opportunity to avoid the full fine and possible insurance costs, while simultaneously learning something useful that will promote overall traffic safety. The cost for this program is roughly one-half of the regular fine - and the money collected through this program is routed back to our communities to support traffic safety, drug education, and other public safety projects.
